Ancient stereo photography work
1904 Stereogliphs - Try these in your HMD of choice:
I recently aquired many artifacts from the collection of a family friend's estate. Within some old boxes a treasure of old pictures and sound recordings from a bygone era were discovered. Some of the items are on formats that I dont have access to hardware that can read/view/hear with. Amazingly through some trial and error I was able to VR view the hard copy stereo photos, and even some that were printed on small glass plates. I found that the virtual reality of 110 years ago is compatible with VR devices of today and got these into my oculus rift DK1 without much work. Take a view at them. The glass plate images are apparently from France [Stereoscopiques] and were much more difficult to work with. You may have to zoom and move the image around to get it in stereo. I also noticed that the tour of the mansion on the glass plate images is ironically similar to the tour offered in the current google cardboard demos (Château de Versailles) out now. What goes around comes around...
Try out the sample links by resizing and Ctrl+, or Ctrl- on your keyboard to fit your screen. (click on the links to bring them up in a tab) I am experimenting with creating side by side YouTube samples of such saved as video and stills so that YouTube recognizes them as VR and offers them up in your VR platform's YouTube app straight to your headset. This concept is related to my current work in UNREAL to output 360 and stereo 180 VR movies and captures of scenes such that a wider audience can be reached and the large scenes can be shown in a small data package.
